Preventions</title><content type='html'>I thought I'd take today to address some health and wellness questions I've received. While fitness is the foundation I want you all to build your lifestyle from, it's also good to be sure your skin is lookin' good too. Right?!?  :)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We've all seen the commercials on TV for the acne treatments promoted by actresses. While these products are effective they can also be too pricey for some of our budgets. So we visit the local drug store to find the generic knock off that is half price. That's a great savings but for most people, there are very simple home remedies for acne that work, and they are extremely inexpensive. See the tips below.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1)      Keep your face and hair clean.&lt;br /&gt;While this may sound very simple and obvious many people miss the point. You see, your skin has what are called sebaceous glands. These glands produce natural oil. In moderation, this oil is good for normal skin. But if your skin is sensitive or if too much oil is produced acne can develop. Washing your face two or three times per day will go a long way toward keeping this oil in check. Be sure to use a gentle touch as you wash, a massage action is recommended. Over-washing can irritate the acne.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By the way, you should also keep your hair clean. Because your hair is so close to your face any oil from it can be transferred to your face.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2)      Keep your hands away from your face. We tend to forget that although our hands look clean they actually carry bacteria, dirt, grim and oil. Do your best to keep your hands clean and to avoid putting them on your face.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3)      Try soaking a cotton ball in witch hazel and dabbing your face with it before bedtime or use as a replacement for your regular toner. The results may surprise you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4)      Anytime you use moisturizers or other products on your face be sure that they are non-comedogenic, or acne-genic. This simply means that the products have been developed in a way that will not cause acne.&lt;br /&gt;After using a moisturizer try soaking a cotton ball with benzoyl peroxide and dabbing your face.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5)      Exfoliating dead skin cells will help keep skin clean and prevent any build up of oils that can cause acne. But gentle action is always best since rough abrasive exfoliation can cause irritation and make the condition worse.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6)      Relax.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stress has been proven to be related to overactive hormones and various glands of the body. This is definitely associated with acne in many cases. Learn to relax and enjoy life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even with these simple techniques it is wise to seek the advice of a professional. Sometimes our doctor can pinpoint an allergy or other cause of the acne. Many of the farmers and their family&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;had contracted it and many died..&lt;br /&gt;The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ. She said that several years ago many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work... (And no, she is not in the onion business.) The moral of the story is, buy some onions and place them in bowls around your home. If you work at a desk, place one or two in your office or under your desk or even on top somewhere. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu. If this helps you and your loved ones from getting sick, all the better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you do get the flu, it just might be a mild case.. Whatever, what have you to lose? Just a few bucks on onions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Weldon, thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmers story...but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia and needless to say I was very ill...I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put one end on a fork and then place the forked end into an empty jar...placing the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs...sure enough it happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the other note.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have used an onion which has been left in the fridge, and sometimes I don't use a whole one at one time, so save the other half for later.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now with this info, I have changed my mind....will buy smaller onions in the future.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of mayonnaise. Mullins is huge, and is owned by 11 brothers and sisters in the Mullins family. My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned from a chemist.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The guy who gave us our tour is named Ed. He's one of the brothers Ed is a chemistry expert and is involved in developing most of the sauce formula. He's even developed sauce formula for McDonald's.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially- made Mayo is completely safe.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the quaint essential picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ed says that when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the onions, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES .&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He explained, onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your&lt;br /&gt;sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any&lt;br /&gt;commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, how's that for news? Take it for what you will. I (the author) am going to be very careful about my onions from now on. For some reason, I see a lot of credibility coming from a chemist and a company that produces millions of pounds of mayonnaise every year.'&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also, dogs should never eat onions . Controversy surrounds the disease as many believe the belief of male menopause is more fiction than truth. The Andropause is a gradual process and not exactly the same as menopause. However, like women undergoing menopause, the decrease in hormones in men result in them suffering from symptoms of the Andropause. However, like menopause, symptoms of andropause can vary from person to person. Although the immune system generally returns to normal within a few hours, consistent regular exercise is believed to make these positive changes in the immune systems last a little bit longer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Is more better?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While moderate exercise has been linked to a positive immune system response, there is also evidence to suggest that too much intense exercise can reduce immunity. During intense physical activity, stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline raise blood pressure and cholesterol levels and suppress the immune system. Research has shown that more than 90-minutes of high intensity endurance exercise can actually make individuals more susceptible to illness for up to 72 hours following the conclusion of the exercise session.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Tips to improve your immune system:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Engaging in moderate intensity exercise (on a scale of 1-10, moderate intensity would be about a 6) 30 minutes per day, at least five days per week. All muscles in the human body have the ability to refer pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This means that when a muscle is injured, tight, in spasm or congested it will often cause pain far from where the problem is. And the muscles in the Lower Back are no exception and can certainly have complicated pain referral patterns that can confuse a lot of people, even trained healthcare professionals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To make this simple, below is a list of common back pain problems so you can decide which fits you:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. &lt;b&gt;Lower Back&lt;/b&gt; pain and stiffness after sitting or bending or going from sitting to standing especially along the lower spine and across the waistline-&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Common causes:&lt;/b&gt; Hip flexor (muscles in the front of the hips) tightness, spasm or strain, especially in the Psoas muscle which attaches to all levels of the Lumbar Spine (lower back), including the intervertebral discs, and runs forward and down along the front portion of the pelvis to attach at the upper groin area. Also involved is the Iliacus muscle which attaches at the pelvis and runs forward and down along the front portion of the pelvis to attach next to the Psoas muscle at the upper groin area.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. &lt;b&gt;Localized&lt;/b&gt; pain at the Sacroiliac joint (the bump you feel at the waistline just below your lower back) when you stand-&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C&lt;b&gt;ommon causes:&lt;/b&gt; the Gluteal (buttocks) area and front of hips. Tightness and or weakness in the Gluteals as well as Hip Flexor (front of hips) tightness/ spasm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Pain radiating down the outside or &lt;b&gt;back of your leg&lt;/b&gt; when you &lt;i&gt;stand&lt;/i&gt;-&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Common causes: Piriformis muscle (a deep muscle located underneath the Gluteals) tightness and or spasm as well as Gluteal tightness, strain and overuse.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Pain in Lower Back while you &lt;i&gt;sit&lt;/i&gt;-&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Common cause:&lt;/b&gt; Spasm of the lower back paraspinal muscles (the small stabilizing muscles along our spine.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. &lt;b&gt;Pain in butt&lt;/b&gt;ocks area-&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Common causes:&lt;/b&gt; Quadratus lumborum (a muscle that attaches to the top back portion of the pelvis and runs up along the spine and attaches to the lowest rib) muscle tightness and piriformis tightness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*****&lt;br /&gt;Now this is a small and partial list but it can give you an idea that where you "feel" the pain is not often where the problem is.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once you can identify the true cause of your back pain, then the solutions are much more obvious. And your time spent trying to fix yourself is better utilized and more effective. Most often treatment for low back pain consists of exercises to help balance muscle imbalances. Some loss of fitness is inevitable, but there are ways to help minimize it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here’s what happens to your body when you take a break from exercise.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Matters of the Heart&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The degree to which cardiovascular fitness declines during a period of de-training depends upon what kind of shape you were in to begin with. Individuals who are extremely fit, such as highly trained athletes, experience a rapid drop in fitness during the first three weeks of detraining, after which the rate of loss tapers off.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A significant level of fitness—higher than that of an untrained person—is retained for about 12 weeks. Individuals with low-to-moderate fitness levels show little change in cardiovascular fitness within the first few weeks, but their abilities rapidly decline in the weeks immediately following that period.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Performance Jitters&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ability to perform a given sport or activity, whether it involves swinging a bat in softball or running 10Ks, invariably declines when the sport is abandoned for any length of time. Marathoners experience a noticeable reduction in endurance performance during a maximal aerobic treadmill test after just 15 days of inactivity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Similarly, swimmers experience a decrement in arm strength within as little as a month layoff from their normal training regimen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Numerous variables come into play when analyzing the ability to perform a particular sport-specific skill, making it difficult to analyze the effects of detraining. Some are like riding a bike—you never forget how—while others, such as the ability to deliver an accurate serve in tennis, involve specific timing and well-trained muscles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Speaking of Muscles...&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With the exception of a genetically blessed few, most of us have to work at building strength through formal or informal strength-training workouts. Again, well-trained athletes have the edge, because the positive effects of training remain evident for weeks, sometimes even months, after training is stopped.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lesser-trained individuals can expect to see their muscle strength and conditioning levels decline at a slightly faster rate, though not at the levels seen in sedentary individuals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Stem the De-training Tide&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Experts agree that the best way to avoid losing much of the health and fitness benefits you’ve worked so hard to achieve is to do something. If you can’t find the motivation to run for a few weeks or longer, try walking instead. Cross-training is popular because it is a viable means of maintaining, or even increasing, one’s fitness level.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Runners can give their knees a break by switching to cycling, swimmers can work their legs on a stair stepper, and aerobics enthusiasts can take their workouts outdoors by hiking through a local park or reserve.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If an injury is keeping you from your favorite activities, take your worries to the pool. Of course, it’s always advisable to check with your physician before resuming exercise after an injury. Regardless of which activity you choose, be sure to progress gradually.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If boredom is the problem, now is the time to try that sport you’ve been considering for so long. In-line skating, tai chi, boot-camp workouts—whatever strikes your fancy. Here are some tips that can help you get beyond your plateau and increase your endurance in your workouts.&lt;p&gt;First of all, if you're looking to increase your weight lifting endurance - the best way to do that is by working on your cardio program. Improved cardiovascular fitness, whether done by running on a treadmill, riding an exercise bike, or workout out on an elliptical trainer, is an excellent way to improve your endurance during a resistance training workout.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When you put together your cardio training plan, divide it into three levels. The first level is your intense plan - this is where you're training so hard, you can't talk to anybody during your workout, even if you tried.  Your intense plan pushes you to and maybe even beyond your limits.  This is the plan that will help you the most because the more you push your limit, the easier it will become to increase it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The second level is your moderate level - this is where you could blurt out a few short words. The moderate level is important because it also pushes your limit, but it doesn't push your body as hard as the intense level.  You don't want to do the intense plan all the time because you'll get burned out and so will your muscles!  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Finally, the third level is your recovery level - this is where you could carry on a conversation while working out.  This level provides the much-needed break your body needs from the intense and moderate workouts.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Next, plan your routines. You can base your plan on whether you do your cardio workouts once a week, twice a week, or three times a week. If you workout more than this for your cardio routine, just double up the routines - if you workout four times per week, take the 2x plan, and do it twice during the week.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;- 1x per week: Do the "Intense" workout (below), then do 15 minutes at an easy pace.&lt;br /&gt;- 2x per week: Do the "Intense" workout one day, then the "Moderate" one the other day.&lt;br /&gt;- 3x per week: Do "Intense" one day, "Moderate" the next, and "Recovery" on the third.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Workout: &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;- Intense: To complete an intense workout, do eight alternating sets of 1 minute at hard, 1 minute easy - without rest between sets.&lt;br /&gt;- Moderate: To complete a moderate workout, do five alternating sets of 3 minutes hard, 2 minutes medium - without rest between sets.&lt;br /&gt;- Recovery: To complete a recovery workout, do 25 minutes at an easy pace&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;After a couple of weeks with this workout plan you should start to see your endurance increase and improve - both in your cardio workouts, as well as your weight training sessions.
